The Executive Chairman of Oriade Local Council Development Area Hon Ramotalai Akinlola-Hassan gave out huge amount of money, the first of its kind in the history of Local Government Administration in Nigeria , as bursary to 380 students of the council from various tertiary institutions across the country, with a call to the beneficiaries to use the bursary to develop their education.
Delivering her keynote address at the event which held at the council secretariat and was well attended by the students, Hon Hassan submitted that she was motivated to assist the students with the bursary because of her belief that “Education is the passport to the future and the most powerful weapon which can be used to change the world.She added that, education development, being one of the cardinal programmes of her political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC),also informed her reasons for giving out the bursary award to the students.
In her words, she told the students; “It is our belief that the monetary support we are offering you today, will go a long way in allowing you to continue your studies without any hindrances”.
She continued: “There is a popular saying that to whom much is given, much is expected.You are all expected to make judicious use of this rare opportunity,by ensuring that the bursary is spent specifically on your education and nothing more”.
The council chairman, submitted that spending the money judiciously is the only way the students can justify the huge amount of public fund expended on them.
Hon Ramotalai disclosed that the provision of the bursary award is not her first time of contributing to the growth of education in the council area, adding that when she was at the Lagos State House of Assembly,as a member, representing Amuwo-Odofin Constituency 11, she gave out free GCE and JAMB forms to students and also provided free school uniforms for all pupils in the 21 public primary schools in Oriade LCDA.
She commended the Bursary Award Committee led by the former Leader of the council’s Legislative Arm, Hon Kasali Jamiu Abiodun for the excellent job they did during the screening of all the students, and for giving their consent to her request to allow all the 380 students who applied for the bursary to emerge as beneficiaries.
While giving the breakdown of the beneficiaries, Hon Hassan stated that under the indigene category, 2 PH.D students will receive the sum of #150,000 naira each, 27 students undergoing masters and post graduate programmes will receive #100,000 each and 201 students of students undergoing first degree, BS.C, HND, OND and NCE programmes will receive #30,000 naira each.
She explained further that, under the Non-Indigine category, 1 PH. D student will receive #50,000 naira, 10 students undergoing their masters and post graduate programmes will receive #30,000 naira each, while 139 students, undergoing BS.C, HND, OND and NCE programmes will receive #20,000 each.
The visibly elated students expressed their deep appreciation to Hon Ramotalai for considering them worthy of the bursary,adding that they will make her proud as students of tertiary institutions from Oriade Council.
The eventful and epoch making programme had in attendance the seven elected councillors in Oriade Council, led by their Leader,Mr Shittu Jamiu Jimoh, members of Bursary Award Committee, led by its Chairman, the former leader of the council’s Legislative Arm, Mr Kasali Jamiu Abiodun, the Council Manager, Engr Akitoye Babatunde Semiu, the Council Treasurer, Mrs Gbesan Olushola, other management staff and APC stalwarts in the council area.
