74 Widows, Indigents, Others Benefit from Zakat and Sadaqat Foundation N9M Largesse

An Islamic organization, Zakat & Sadaqat Foundation has empowered at least 74 widows, indigents and elderly persons in Sagamu, Ogun State with N9,473,860.

The organisation, according to its Executive Director Prince Sulaiman Olagunju, has been putting smiles in the faces of many indigent and widows across the country for more than ten years now.

He said the zakat disbursement will cover 21 states of the Federation and the distribution shall be rounded in Lagos next month.

While welcoming the participants, Olagunju appreciated all the payers for upholding one of the most important pillars of Islam.

The Executive Director said; “Many lives have been touched and empowered through zakat disbursement, Zakat remains the only weapon that can eradicate poverty in our country.”

He decries poor compliance with zakat payment in Nigeria despite the high number of wealthy individuals in the society.

In his lecture at the event on the topic: ‘Combating Poverty and Insecurity in Nigeria: the Zakat model, a University don, Professor Adedeji AbdulHameed from the department of Pharmacology, Olabisi Onabanjo University urges Muslims to always cultivate the habit of paying zakat and if they are unable, they should do sadaqat (almsgiving) as commanded by Allah in the Holy Qur’an.

The varsity don identifies zakat payment and distribution as one of the main panacea to poverty eradication and combating insecurity in our society.

Professor Adedeji canvases for the distribution of wealth among rich and poor in order to have an egalitarian society.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke with our correspondent express appreciation to the foundation for its kind gestures.

Mr Lukman Thabit who was supported with high tech furniture making equipment expressed his joy.

“I have never thought of getting this machine in my life, it will definitely turn around my furniture business. I thank Z& S Foundation for this support,” he said.

Among dignitaries present at the zakat distribution include Chief Imam of Remoland, Sheikh AbdulQodri Junaid among others.
