Following the federal government determination at ensuring that the vulnerable in the country directly benefit from its numerous poverty alleviation programs, through targeted programs, the Lagos State government has inaugurated the Oshodi-Isolo local government community-based target team for data capturing.
While inaugurating the team at the council secretariat on Tuesday, head of the operating unit, Lagos state operating coordinating unit (LASOCU), Mr.Kareem Olarewaju Yusuf, said the essence of the program is to collate comprehensive details of vulnerable persons within each community of the local government.
According to Yusuf, the program has been on since 2015 while many states have benefitted from it since inception with the sharing of conditional cash transfer to the poor in their various communities.
He said further that Lagos State Government in the year 2019 showed interest and the will to effectively participate in the program but was delayed due to the outbreak of COVID-19 which slowed down the speed of execution.
He added that over six local governments and local council development areas (LCDAs) have benefitted from this program.
The head of the operating unit said it is very important Oshodi-Isolo Local Government benefits from the programm as well given its economic value to the state and federal government at large.
Yusuf seized the occasion to charged the community leaders to ensure that those that will be captured in the exercise are the real vulnerable and the poorest of the people to ensure that the program achieves its purpose.
The council chairman, Hon. Idris Bolaji Muse Ariyoh in his address emphasized the importance of the exercise and reasons the program must be given the necessary awareness cum sensitization needed in each of the community to ensure that those captured reflected those that the program was designed to capture.
He said, “it is unarguable that there is a high level of abject poverty within the community as there are a lot of people that still find it very difficult in meeting their daily needs.
“This exercise is to provide succour for such people in each community through proper data gathering during the exercise.”
The council helmsman charged the team to ensure that transparency, honesty, and sincerity of purpose remain their watchword throughout the process of gathering data of the vulnerable.
He promised that his administration will provide the necessary logistic support to ensure that the exercise record a huge success and the targeted people are the beneficiaries of the program.
