US insists on schools reopening despite corona virus increase

The United States Education Secretary, Betsy DeVos insists on the need for reopening of schools despite the rise in corona virus cases in several states in the US.

Florida had the highest number of more than 15,000 cases in a single day and more than 3 million in the country.

DeVos said an interview with CNN: “Kids need to get back to school, they need to get back in the classroom.”
“Families need for kids to get back in the classroom. And it can be done safely.”

The pressure to reopen schools had come from the president as he threatens to withhold Federal funding from schools that refuse to reopen.

“There is no desire to take the money away. In fact, we want to see schools open and have been committed to ensuring the resources are there to do that”, the Education Secretary said further.

However, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi holds a different view as she accused Trump of messing with children’s health.

“Going back to school presents the biggest risk for the spread of the corona virus”, Pelosi said.
“If there are CDC guidelines, there should be requirements… There should be mandates”.

In responding to Pelosi comments, Betsy DeVos said:
“What we heard from the secretary was malfeasance and dereliction of duty”.
